Protected Areas within the Biosphere Reserve

  • Tusheti Strict Nature Reserve (IUCN Category I) – 12,627.2 ha 
  • Tusheti National Park (IUCN Category II) – 69,515 ha 
  • Tusheti Protected Landscape (IUCN Category V) – 31,518 ha 
  • Babaneuri Strict Nature Reserve (IUCN Category I) – 834 ha 
  • Batsara Nature Reserve (IUCN Category I) – 3,036 ha 
  • Ilto Managed Reserve (IUCN Category IV) – 7,591 ha 

 

Emerald Network

The Emerald Network is a pan-European ecological network aimed at ensuring the long-term survival of wild flora and fauna species and their habitats of special European importance. It is based on common principles shared by all participating countries. 

The establishment of the Emerald Network is a mandatory requirement of the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (the Bern Convention, 1979) and serves as one of its main implementation tools.

 

Part of the Three Alazani Rivers Biosphere Reserve includes habitats recognized as part of the Emerald Network:

  • Tusheti (GE0000008), 114,375.44 ha (designated in 2018) 
  • Bakhara (GE0000015), 2,985.96 ha (designated in 2017) 
  • Ilto (GE0000024), 28,466.86 ha (designated in 2018)
